Mechanisms & Motion

Mechanism design requires both creativity and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Mechanism dynamics simulation
  • Actuator selection and optimization
  • Friction compensation
  • Complete mechanism simulation
IJK Controls has the control theory background to put the mechanism to work:
  • Precision motion control
  • Turn-key motion controller design
  • High-speed control loops
Below are some examples case studies.

Switching mechanism analysis and motion control

Switching mechanism analysis and motion control

The behavior of a complex mechanism was correctly predicted from a detailed simulation. The mechanism analysis led directly to useful changes to the motion control strategy.

Motion control for sewing robot

Motion control for sewing robot

A leader in the robotic sewing market asked IJK Controls to prototype a next generation motion controller concept. Unlike previous generations, this product was to have a definite break between low-level motion control and a polished touch-screen based user interface.

IJK Controls architected the overall motion control strategy and improved upon the basic robotic controls in previous generations. We quickly defined the interface between the user screens and low-level motion controller.

Structural dynamics of mechanisms

Structural dynamics of mechanisms

Customers with a variety of mechanism and motion control challenges come to IJK Controls for our structural dynamics capabilities and understanding. Besides acting as shock and vibration consultants, we have contributed at a deeper level to understanding structural issues and improvements. We have built custom motion control models that capture the behavior of bearings, belts, composites, mechanisms, welded joints and other structural components. We have developed custom code to extract structural transfer functions from finite element models.

Laser steering and closed-loop temperature control

Laser steering and closed-loop temperature control

A start-up developing a new process for curing powder coats with a laser heat source was unable to close the temperature control loop in a stable way with satisfactory performance. The system uses a thermal detector co-boresighted with a high power industrial laser to heat powder coats to the curing temperature.

After failing with off-the-shelf industrial PID control solutions and experiencing frustration with motion control consultants, the company contacted IJK Controls to provide the controller at the heart of their technology.

Kinematics and dynamics analysis

Kinematics and dynamics analysis

Getting the dynamics correct is an essential step to many new mechanism designs and control design efforts. IJK Controls has decades of experiences with solving complex dynamics problems.

IJK Controls uses symbolic math tools to formulate the kinematics and solve equations. Comprehensive dynamics including inertia tensors and reflected torques, for example, require painstaking attention to detail. Custom designed modules auto-code the resulting equations into real-time C or C++, leaving well-documented formulations and reducing human coding mistakes.

Test lab controls design

Test lab controls design

An HVAC component supplier contacted IJK Controls regarding the design and setup of a new test facility. The facility was to include a number of specialized labs for testing acoustic and airflow performance of specialized grilles and diffusers. Some labs are used to validate and demonstrate custom applications such as surgery rooms. Other labs are used as part of production qualification. Another has a simulated cold window to measure the airflow and comfort levels in a heated room with a full wall window under subzero exterior conditions.
